Invention Patent Descriptive Report for BABY FORMULA CONTAINER.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to an improved tamper-proof container 5 for storing and dispensing fluid products.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Currently, granulated or powdered products, such as baby formula, are packaged in containers. Consumers or users of such containers often find it difficult to open the container and locate and remove the spoon from the package on first use without experiencing spillage. Once the lid of the container is removed or opened, the granulated or powdered contents are often packed in parts of the interior of the lid or top of the container, which results in spillage, as the contents fall out of the lid or top. While some of the falling dust may return to the interior of the container, most of it is lost and contaminated, as it is spilled into the surrounding work space.
Additionally, the containers cannot adequately seal the contents after the container has been opened for the first 20 times, allowing the contents to be oxidized and / or contaminated. The design of such containers may also allow the unwanted and reckless discharge of the contents of various areas insufficiently sealed from the container.
Certain baby formula container designs are known in the art. For example, North American Patent Application Publication No. 2008/0173657 describes a corresponding container and spoon assembly with a removable lid to retain powdered material. There is a need for an improved baby formula container that is tamper-proof, that allows a user to accurately measure the baby formula to be dispensed, that allows a user to open and reopen the container without contaminating the baby formula, which allow a user to access the measuring spoon without contamination of the contents, which
2/8 minimize pressure differentials in the container without compromising the contents of the container and that minimizes spillage and contamination of the contents of the container.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides a container comprising a body having a bottom and a side wall defining a reservoir, a collar connected to the upper end of the body, a removable seal to seal the top of the reservoir, and a lid hingedly engaged with the collar. The bottom side of the lid provides a docking station10 for holding a measuring device, such as a spoon, suitable for measuring the contents of the container. The container can also have a leveling bar located at or near the top of the reservoir to allow the contents of the spoon to be leveled so that a consistent amount is dispensed by the spoon.
The lid is firmly closed against the collar to seal the can and prevent the contents from spilling. In the closed position, the docking station is inside the can, so that any measuring device attached to the can is guaranteed against loss or contamination.
The container may also include a tamper evident band on a portion of the lid and / or collar to indicate whether the container has been opened. It can also include an adulteration strip on one side that will indicate the quantity or condition of the contents.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
In one embodiment, the present invention provides a container 15 suitable for retaining fluid contents, such as a powdered or granular formula for babies, which includes a removable seal to seal the contents held in the container reservoir, a collar attached to the top of the container , and a cap hingedly connected to the collar. When the lid is opened, the contents of the container can be dispensed from the reservoir; when closed, the lid will firmly engage the collar to seal the contents. The bottom side of the lid, which will be inside the container, when the lid is closed, contains a docking station and enough space, so that a measuring device, such as a spoon, can be safely stored inside the can to prevent loss or contamination. Optionally, a leveling bar to level the contents removed by the spoon is located near the top of the reservoir.
According to an exemplary embodiment, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the infant formula container 100 30 in an open position. The baby formula container 100 includes a reservoir 101 configured to hold the contents to be dispensed, a collar 102 affixed to an upper end of the reservoir 101, the
4/8 collar additionally comprising a removable seal 103 which seals the contents held in reservoir 101, a lid 104, hingedly engaged with collar 102, providing an open position where the contents of the container can be dispensed from reservoir 101 or providing a position closed where the lid 104 is again sealed to the collar 102.
The lid 104 provides space and a docking station 106 for holding and storing a spoon 107. The container additionally comprises a leveling bar 108 for leveling the contents removed by the spoon 107.
Baby formula container reservoir 101 is designed to retain granulated baby powder, or the like. The container body 100 is constructed of a metal or plastic material suitable to be a unitary member of approximately uniform wall thickness.
In one embodiment, the body of the container 100 is constructed of a metal material, including, but not limited to, tin, metal-coated tin, and aluminum. In a separate embodiment, the body of the container 100 is constructed of a suitable plastic material that is recyclable or non-recyclable. Suitable plastics to form container 100 include, but are not limited to, polystyrene, polystyrene-acrylonitrile, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, styrene-maleic anhydride, polycarbonate, high-density polyethylene, polyethylene, polypropylene copolymers, polypropylene, tereftal copolymers polyethylene, polyvinylcyclohexane, and the like, and mixtures thereof.
In one embodiment, container 100 will have a semitransparent transparent transparent tamper evident strip as part of the side wall to allow visualization of the interior of reservoir 101 and therefore to visually indicate to a potential user the quality and / or volume of the baby formula granulated in the reservoir. Typically, containers of the invention are constructed to accommodate infant powder weights of 100 to 2000 g, more typically 500 to 1000 g, for example, 900 kg.
In one embodiment, container 100 has a cylindrical body
5/8 cylindrical, providing a circular cross section, and collar 102 is circular. In another embodiment, the body has a rectangular cross section and the collar is also rectangular. In any case, cap 104 is formed to closely match collar 102. Those skilled in the art 5 will readily understand that other forms are also possible in the practice of this invention; the invention is not limited to the forms described here.
Referring now to Figure 2, a perspective view of the baby formula container 100 is shown with the lid 104 in an open position with the removable seal 103 on the collar 102 in a partially open position.
In one embodiment, the lid 104 will feature an inviolable band that is wrapped around the lid 104 of the baby formula container 100. In one embodiment of the band, a notable red strip is provided between perforated lines to indicate to a user where to tear off the 15 tamper evident band, and a container opening icon located at four locations on the tamper evident band that communicates to the user the best way to open the baby formula container. The tamper-resistant band also adds a level of security that prevents the closure from opening during transport, handling, shipping, shelf stock and consumer handling.
A removable seal 103 is connected to the container 100 at the top of the reservoir 101 to vacuum seal the contents in the container 101. The removable seal 103 allows the vacuum packaging of the contents in the container 100 and acts as an internal tamper-resistant coating. 25 One skilled in the food packaging technique will be familiar with such packaging seals either loosely or removably connected. Specifically, metal, adhesive or heat processing can be used to connect a seal formed of polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, metal sheet, plastic sheet or other material suitable to form an airtight seal. Therefore, opening the cover 100 will not compromise seal 103 unless seal 103 is cut or removed by the user.
6/8
Referring now to Figure 3, a side view of the container 100 showing a reservoir 101, a collar 102 and a hingedly connected lid 104 is shown. In one embodiment, the lid and collar are constructed of a suitable plastic material that is recyclable or non-recyclable.
Suitable plastics to form the cap and collar include, but are not limited to, various polymers, such as polystyrene, polystyreneacrylonitrile, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, styrene-maleic anhydride, polycarbonate, high-density polyethylene, polyethylene copolymers, polypropylene, copolymers of polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinylcyclohexane, and the like, and mixtures thereof.
As shown in Figure 3, the cap 104 is domed in shape and is pivotally connected to collar 102, in a skirt-and-sleeve arrangement that allows them to be fitted together. The cover 104 and the collar 102 are connected together by a butterfly joint and are molded as one piece. When closing lid 104, lid 104 will swing towards collar 102 to form a sleeve seal. The outer diameter of the cap 104 and the inner diameter of the collar 102 are designed to have a minimum clearance for the passage of air and to minimize the oxidation of air from the contents. At the top of collar 102, a sealing ring (frieze) is provided, which presents an interference fit with the lid 104, so that when the cover is pressed to pass the sealing frieze and the skirt, air is forced outwards through the minimum space between the cap 104 and the collar 102, a watertight seal being obtained.
In Figure 4, a perspective view of spoon 107 is shown. Spoon 107 consists of a bifurcated handle connected to the scoop of a spoon. The spoon handle is forked where it connects the scoop concavity to allow spoon 107 to efficiently collect baby powder and prevent dust from forming on the handle so that less powder is spilled into the preparation area.
In one embodiment, spoon 107 is shaped from a suitable plastic material, which can be shaped by blowing, extrusion or by
7/8 injection. Suitable plastics for forming the spoon include, but are not limited to, various polymers, such as polystyrene, polystyrene-acrylonitrile, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, styrene-maleic anhydride, polycarbonate, high-density polyethylene, polyethylene copolymers, polypropylene, 5 copolymers of polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinylcyclohexane, and the like, and mixtures thereof. In one embodiment, the spoon has a small opening at the bottom of the concavity to allow air to escape, while collecting baby powder, so that the powder is better placed in the spoon.
Figure 5 shows a perspective view of the leveling bar 108.
Many of the problems in the prior art are solved by the baby formula container of this invention, which provides previously unavailable features including improved sealing capabilities, new ways to minimize baby formula contamination and control spillage of contents, integrated dispensing spoons , and reinforced containers that can be additionally protected against spillage and product damage due to adverse pressure differentials between the sealed product container and the external environment.
The embodiments of the present invention are suitable for use in many applications that involve manufacturing, distributing, storing, selling, and using fluid substances, such as powders, granular materials, or liquids. The container configurations of the invention can be modified to accommodate almost any conceivable type of such materials, and the shape, size, and arrangement of the characteristics and components of the new container can be modified according to the principles of the invention, as may be be required to suit a specific type or amount of fluid material, as well as a preferred mode of use, storage, manufacturing, distribution and / or sales environment.
Alternative modifications and embodiments that may be necessary or desired to establish compatibility with the wide variety of possible applications for the container of this invention are con
8/8 templated here. Consequently, even if only certain embodiments and modifications of the present invention are described and illustrated, it will be understood that the practice of such additional modifications and embodiments and equivalents thereof is within the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined in the claims.
